87 percent of LGBTQ+ families feel their identity limits travel choices, a new report reveals.
In a growing number of nations, millennials are pioneers in embracing queer family vacations. As LGBTQ+ families commence their first multi-generational journeys, Booking.com’s recent Travel Proud study highlights an increased awareness and acceptance concerning the influence of their identity on their travels.
Exploring Limits: How Choices and Concerns Shape Travel Destinations
For LGBTQ+ parents, selecting and booking a travel destination is fraught with unique challenges. Sixty percent of this demographic believe their LGBTQ+ status significantly affects their holiday planning and destination selection, while 78% actively research the LGBTQ+ friendliness of a destination before deciding.
Although more countries are becoming progressive, obstacles remain for LGBTQ+ family travel. Eighty-seven percent of LGBTQ+ parents feel that certain popular travel spots are inaccessible because they or a family member is LGBTQ+. This perception also leads to alterations in their travel aspirations, with 72% feeling that their identity adversely affects their dream destinations.
Fostering Inclusion: The Positive Impact of the Travel Industry on LGBTQ+ Confidence
Nevertheless, LGBTQ+ families recognize the benefits of recent inclusivity efforts in the travel sector. Eighty percent report that these changes have enhanced their comfort levels while traveling, and 81% feel that their LGBTQ+ status boosts their confidence as travelers. In destinations with supportive legislation for LGBTQ+ rights, the majority of LGBTQ+ parents feel at ease throughout their travel experience—83% are comfortable flying from their home country, 84% using public transport, 87% dining in restaurants, and 88% enjoying nightlife with their family.
Adjusting for Safety: Behavioral Changes Among LGBTQ+ Travelers
Once away from home, LGBTQ+ parents often modify their behaviors due to concerns about their identity. Seventy-one percent state that being LGBTQ+ negatively influences their and their family’s actions while traveling, with a similar percentage (74%) reporting it affects how they present themselves. Furthermore, 83% change their appearance or behavior when flying, and 90% adopt disguises to conceal their identity.
