In 2021, Icelandic nationals spent over 740 million U.S. dollars abroad, marking an increase of approximately 200 million dollars from the previous year. By the end of the 2010s, outbound tourism spending in Iceland had exceeded one billion U.S. dollars annually. The sharp decline in 2020 and 2021 can be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic.
