In an exciting new development for travel between Thailand and Malaysia, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is thrilled to celebrate Batik Air Malaysia’s inaugural flight on the Bangkok Don Mueang – Johor Bahru route. This milestone marks a significant enhancement in regional connectivity, highlighting the strong, ongoing partnership between the two nations.
To commemorate the occasion, key executives and representatives from TAT, Thai Lion Air, Batik Air Malaysia, and Don Mueang International Airport warmly welcomed passengers with traditional Thai hospitality. In the spirit of this special event, travelers were gifted with iconic Thai souvenirs, adding a personal touch to their journey.
This new route further strengthens travel ties between Thailand and Malaysia, offering more convenience for travelers and supporting the growing tourism industry in both countries. As of November 2024, this expanded flight network is expected to attract more visitors, boost regional tourism, and foster deeper cultural exchange.
Ms. Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai, TAT Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Asia and South Pacific, said, “We are thrilled to welcome Batik Air Malaysia’s Bangkok-Johor Bahru flight, further strengthening ties between our nations. Malaysia remains a key inbound market, consistently contributing high visitor numbers. This new route enhances connectivity, offering greater convenience for Malaysian travellers, many of whom already enjoy spontaneous trips to Thailand. We are confident it will drive continued growth in arrivals and enrich travel experiences between our countries.”
Batik Air Malaysia, represented by Thai Lion Air and part of the Lion Group, is launching a new daily service on the Bangkok Don Mueang – Johor Bahru route. The flight, OD530, departs Johor Bahru at 12:15 PM and arrives in Bangkok at 1:50 PM. The return service, OD531, leaves Bangkok at 3:05 PM and lands in Johor Bahru at 6:30 PM, providing seamless connectivity between the two destinations.
Malaysia Remains a Key Inbound Market for Thailand
Malaysia continues to be one of Thailand’s top sources of international visitors, with over 4.6 million arrivals recorded in 2023. As of October 2024, the number of Malaysian visitors has reached 4,145,049, suggesting that 2024 may end with another record-breaking year. Factors like proximity, affordability, and Thailand’s rich array of attractions—including world-class cuisine, stunning natural landscapes, top-tier accommodations, and vibrant shopping scenes—make it a favourite destination for Malaysian tourists.
Key Thai destinations for Malaysian travelers include Songkhla, Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, and Chiang Mai, with growing interest in the islands of Phang-Nga and Surat Thani. The relaxation of the TM6 immigration form at the Sadao border (in place since November 2023 and extended until April 2025) has streamlined travel, further encouraging spontaneous visits.
Efficient Land and Air Travel Connections
Thailand’s land borders with Malaysia, serviced by nine permanent checkpoints such as Sadao (Songkhla) and Bukit Kayu Hitam (Kedah), play a crucial role in facilitating cross-border travel. In 2023, 1,514,134 Malaysians entered Thailand via the Sadao checkpoint, with daily arrivals averaging 3,855. The TM6 waiver significantly boosted arrivals during the November-December period, with a 45.55% increase and daily averages rising to 5,611. This momentum continues in 2024, with 1,459,180 land arrivals recorded from January to September, marking a 28.37% year-on-year increase.
Air connectivity between Thailand and Malaysia has also seen a strong rebound. In 2023, flight operations reached 77% of pre-pandemic levels, and 2024 is projected to see an 83.59% increase, with 13,884 flights expected. New route launches, such as AirAsia’s Kuala Lumpur-Pattaya service in June and Malaysia Airlines’ Kuala Lumpur-Chiang Mai route in August, have expanded travel options. Popular routes to Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, and Hat Yai remain heavily trafficked, ensuring continued growth in tourism and connectivity between the two nations.
Ms. Pattaraanong concluded, “The addition of Batik Air Malaysia’s Bangkok-Johor Bahru flight marks a significant step in fostering greater travel opportunities and enriching the relationship between Thailand and Malaysia. With strong connectivity by both land and air and a continued focus on seamless travel, Thailand looks forward to welcoming even more Malaysian visitors in the future.”
