Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development, and Development of the North, Damjan Ćulafić, emphasized that the conservation of the sea is not just an ecological task but a profound moral obligation. This commitment ensures a healthy and clean environment for future generations. During a visit to the Portonovo marina and the Lazure hotel and marina, Ćulafić, alongside his colleagues, assessed the state of nature conservation and environmental protection in these areas. The visit highlighted the significance of maintaining high environmental standards, especially in locations like ports and marinas that are integral to nautical tourism but also pose increased risks to the environment.

Ćulafić stressed the importance of establishing and strictly adhering to environmental standards in these vulnerable areas. He noted that the use of advanced materials and technologies can lead to more efficient models of environmental protection. Such innovations are crucial for the preservation of seas and coastlines, which are vital to both the local population and the broader ecosystem.

Environmental Risks and Necessary Precautions

The minister warned of several environmental risks associated with maritime activities, including the dangers posed by ballast water, the potential for maritime accidents, and pollution from oil derivatives and wastewater from ships. These factors contribute to the degradation of marine environments, making it imperative to implement robust protective measures.

Ćulafić underscored the importance of protecting the sea, describing it as an integral part of the environment and a reflection of the patriotic commitment to safeguarding natural resources. He argued that investments in preserving the sea offer long-term benefits, not only for tourists but also for local communities, by ensuring a sustainable and healthy environment for future generations.

Despite estimates that 80 percent of sea pollution originates from land, Ćulafić emphasized that the remaining 20 percent of pollution from the sea must not be overlooked. He called for strict regulation and control to prevent the presence of illicit chemical substances, heavy metals, detergents, mineral oils, and high concentrations of bacteria in marinas, beaches, and areas like Boke Bay. Controlled use of natural resources is essential to ensure their preservation, and sustainability must be the guiding principle in all such efforts.

Balancing Tourism Development with Environmental Protection

While acknowledging the economic benefits brought by the intensive development of tourism, particularly nautical tourism, Ćulafić also highlighted the environmental challenges that accompany such growth. The minister expressed gratitude to marina employees for their contributions to environmental preservation and emphasized the critical importance of cooperation between state authorities and the private sector. This collaboration is key to achieving the sustainable development of nautical tourism, which balances economic interests with environmental stewardship.

Ćulafić’s remarks and the ministry’s focus on marine conservation underscore the need for a comprehensive approach to environmental protection. This includes leveraging technological advancements, enforcing strict regulations, and fostering partnerships between government entities and private enterprises. Such efforts are vital to ensuring that the natural beauty and ecological integrity of marine environments are preserved for future generations.

Global Implications and Lessons for Travelers

The emphasis on marine conservation in Montenegro, particularly in relation to nautical tourism, has broader implications for the global travel industry. As destinations worldwide grapple with the environmental impacts of tourism, Montenegro’s approach highlights the importance of integrating sustainability into tourism development. Travelers increasingly seek out destinations that prioritize environmental stewardship, and the measures taken by Montenegro could serve as a model for other regions.

By committing to sustainable practices, destinations can attract environmentally conscious travelers, enhancing their appeal in a competitive global market. The focus on protecting marine environments also ensures that these natural resources remain viable for tourism in the long term, supporting the local economy while safeguarding the planet.
