The first time I visited Hallstatt, way before it gained its Instagram royalty badge, I was already swept away by its beauty. I think the whole experience contributed to this feeling of complete awe of the lakeside town of Hallstatt.
Even though the town has become a top destination in the last few years, featured in almost every “most beautiful place to see in Europe guide”, Hallstatt is a tiny picturesque village 1.5 hours away from Salzburg.
There are only a limited number of available hotels in Hallstatt. That’s why I have compiled a list of the best Hallstatt hotels to help you find your perfect accommodation.
If you’re looking for where to stay in Hallstatt, you’ll find anything from luxurious resorts with spa facilities and gourmet dining options to cozy boutique hotels with personalized service to unwind by the lake.

Getting to Hallstatt
The easiest way to get to this UNESCO World Heritage town is by train. With regular connections from major Austrian cities like Salzburg and Vienna to nearby train stations such as Hallstatt Bahnhof or Obertraun-Dachsteinhöhlen.
I personally took the more adventurous way and got off a train on the other side of Lake Hallstatt in Obertraun. From here, you take a boat across the lake to Hallstatt. Seeing the church tower getting bigger and bigger, the houses built almost inside the lake, and the contrast of the colors of the buildings and the lake is an experience I will never forget. It’s so picturesque!
Lastly, planning a road trip through Austria and other parts of Europe offers the ultimate flexibility to explore the region at your own pace. The roads are well-maintained leading to Hallstatt from nearby towns like Bad Ischl and Gosau.
And if you’re short on time, here are some of the best day trips to Hallstatt:
Best Things to Do in Hallstatt
Nestled in the Austrian Alps, Hallstatt is known for its natural beauty and historical significance. So, before I share some of the best Hallstatt hotels, let me tell you the top 10 things you can do when you visit Hallstatt:
Explore the Old Town – get lost on the charming streets of Hallstatt’s Old Town, with its 16th-century Alpine houses and the Market Square.
Visit the Hallstatt Salt Mine – Take the funicular up to the world’s oldest salt mine and learn about the 7,000-year history of salt mining in the region. During your visit, you can even slide down the miners’ slides and cross the underground salt lake.
Skywalk Hallstatt Viewing Platform – For breathtaking views over Hallstatt and the surrounding Hallstatt lake and mountains, walk out onto the Skywalk. This main attraction is located high above the town.
Boat Tour on Lake Hallstatt – Take a boat tour on Lake Hallstatt to enjoy the beauty of the lake and get a unique view of the village from the water.
Hallstatt Ossuary (Bone House) – Visit this small chapel near the Catholic Parish Church to see an unusual collection of over 600 painted skulls dating back to the 12th century. Together with the cemetery on the hilltop, this is a clear reminder of local customs, the town’s history, and how these people honor their dead.
Dachstein Ice Caves – Just a short drive from Hallstatt, the Dachstein Ice Caves offer an incredible natural wonder where you can explore the ice formations and giant ice sculptures.
5 Fingers Viewing Platform – Extending over a cliff with stunning vistas of the surrounding area, the 5 Fingers offers one of the most spectacular viewing platforms in the Alps. It is accessible from the Dachstein Krippenstein cable car, and although it is an incredible and unforgettable experience, I don’t recommend it if you are not comfortable with heights.
Visit Hallstatt World Heritage Museum – For history lovers, this Museum is a great place to learn more about the area’s prehistoric past, including findings from the salt mines and local archaeological sites.
Hiking and Cycling – The regions around Hallstatt offer a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, with its numerous hiking and cycling trails offering scenic views of the mountains, lakes, and forests.
Attend a Local Festival – What better way to get to know a place and experience its culture than to blend in with its local people? During summer, there are festivals around the lake with live music, traditional food, and spectacular fireworks over the lake. In winter, you’ll find the Christmas Market or Christkindlmarkt, occurring during the Advent weekends in December. The Hallstatt Christkindlmarkt is one of the most beautiful street markets in Europe with beautifully decorated stalls selling crafts, gifts, and local delicacies, adding an atmosphere of winter wonderland.
Where to Stay in Hallstatt – Frequently Asked Questions
📍 Which area is best for staying in Hallstatt?
The small village vibe of Hallstatt is charming but the limited accommodation can leave you rather hand-tied. The car-free historic center is ideal for those who want to be in the heart of it all, close to major sites like the Salt Mines and Hallstatt Lake. For a quieter stay with a local feel, the outskirts of Hallstatt or even the nearby villages of Obertraun and Gosau can offer a peaceful stay with the same stunning alpine surroundings and easy access to the town.
📷 Is Hallstatt too touristy now?
Yes and no. Despite its popularity, the sought-after village has been able to maintain its traditional charm and gorgeous historic wooden buildings with breathtaking lake views. That said, it is one of the most visited places in Europe, with over 3 million people visiting Hallstatt every year, so, in that sense, yes, it can get a little bit touristy. (Fun fact: Hallstatt itself has a population of around 800 people.) To fully enjoy Hallstatt while avoiding the crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons or early in the morning or late in the afternoon when tourist numbers are typically lower.
🗓️ Is Hallstatt worth a day trip?
Hallstatt is absolutely worth a day trip for its picturesque beauty, cultural heritage, and unique attractions. However, to fully appreciate its serene beauty, you should consider an overnight stay at one of the hotels listed above to experience the village in its full charm.
